UNESCO World Heritage Volunteers (WHV) Initiative was launched in 2008 to engage young people and youth organizations in preserving and promoting World Heritage sites. The initiative is currently coordinated by the UNESCO World Heritage Centre in cooperation with Better World.

The program, "Ahmedabad: From the lenses of built heritage," is a 10-day workshop that focuses on hands-on learning activities on the significance of heritage, the role of heritage and culture in society, and the technical aspects of preserving historic properties. This program provides a unique opportunity for individuals worldwide to contribute to the preservation of cultural heritage sites while gaining valuable work experience and cultural insights.

About the Camp:

The activities at the camp will be varied and will include site visits, workshops, and hands-on activities related to heritage preservation. Volunteers will work alongside local experts to learn about the cultural significance of the heritage sites and the challenges facing their preservation. They will also have the opportunity to contribute to the restoration of these sites through activities such as documentation technologies, site maintenance, understanding the vernacular architecture and the material integrity.

The World Heritage Volunteer Action Camp will take place in collaboration with UNESCO and other expert local organizations to curate the best learning experience for all the participants. These organizations will provide logistical support and guidance to the volunteers.

The organizers of the World Heritage Volunteer Action Camp believe that this initiative will not only contribute to the preservation of Ahmedabad’s heritage sites but also promote cultural exchange and understanding between volunteers from different parts of the world. The camp will provide a platform for volunteers to learn from each other, share their experiences, and develop a network of like-minded individuals who are committed to heritage preservation.
